What are ghost faces in photos?
Readers of this website and my news columns send me many spooky photos to be analysed. Often the photos are of 'ghost faces' Most of these photos are of strangers but occasionally the camera captures images of dead people they recognise.
Some of these images can easily be explained but others may have a paranormal origin:
GHOST FACES CAUSED BY TEXTURES
People often see ghost faces in random patterns, textures or drapery. Our unconscious mind tries to make sense of random shapes and create the form of something that makes sense to us. This is why we see images in clouds, the embers of a glowing fire or in a piece of burnt toast. The image that is most easily recognised by the unconscious is a human face so our mind will instinctively ‘see’ faces as it tries to create order out of randomness.
GHOST FACES CAUSED BY SUPERIMPOSED IMAGES
Double exposures used to happen a lot with film cameras when the film jams. If a person has unexpectedly walked into the shot they would appear transparent and look just like a ghost.
These are the two most common causes for Ghost Faces appearing in pictures but there are many more ways that phantoms may appear on film and just occasionally there is no earthly explanation for these supernatural images.
